to the editor: Not long after President Reagan Striking air traffic controllers were fired and partially replaced them with scabs and hastily trained replacements, I was a Trans World Airlines flight attendant bringing coffee to the 747 cabin crew when all hell broke loose. We were on the taxiway heading to the runway access when, at the same time, another 747 was heading towards us at the same speed and the same distance from the runway access, causing a head-on collision.
The screams from both cabins to the unresponsive tower were terrifying. Fortunately, before the tower responded, both 747s slammed on the brakes. We were so close. To this day, I can still see the face of the other 747 captain.
The current occupant of the White House has been flying his own private planes long enough to be able to understand the ramifications of cutting the Federal Aviation Administration's workforce as severely as his administration has (“Airplane collides with a fire truck at New York's LaGuardia Airport. 2 pilots die”. March 23). The fatal consequences fall on him. Nobody else.
