to the editor: I ride Class 1 e-bikes on the beach bike path most weekends (“E-bikes can be fast and dangerous. Here's how to stay safe.” April 1). I wear a helmet, use headlights and taillights, and adjust my speed to suit the conditions.
However, I am very often overtaken by cyclists who are going too fast, sometimes filming with one hand on a cell phone and not wearing a helmet. The bike path is a shared recreational space where children run across, dogs roam, volleyballs roll, and pedestrians cross without looking.
It is not enough to discuss the issue. I rarely see existing safety standards being enforced. Clear enforcement of the rules, along with warnings and fines, would go a long way toward creating a safer, more cohesive environment for everyone.
