To the editor: Columnists Anita Chabria and Steve López are telling the lies that are the basis of the logic that the president is using to justify his invasion of the angels (“Newsom's democracy is under assault” could turn the tables into Trump. “ June 11; “Why this overheated invasion of Los Angeles looks so ugly and feels so personal,” June 9).
George Orwell wrote: “Don't you see that the whole goal of Newspeak is to reduce the range of thought?”
It is not surprising that the president, his administration and his republican cohort reduce what they call “news conferences” to reduce prevarications, such as lies about the invasion and burning of Los Angeles and, by association, all California. Like lies about the criminal nature of what an immigrant is. As the attempt to eliminate the right to protest. Like the lies that soldiers are taking out the fires (from the creation of President Trump itself). Like the lie that simply asking a question is not American. Like the lie that daily activities (bringing their daughter to school or going to work) are not part of the American fabric.
A reasonable vocabulary for native English speakers is 20,000 to 35,000 words. Apparently, Trump has perhaps a tenth of that amount. Communicating your thoughts, ideas and plans is easy for him. Simply repeat your lies with the most frequency and as simple as possible.
As Chabria points out, our leaders, such as Governor Gavin Newsom, established the way; As López writes, our neighbors set the example. We must continue. His journalism is helping Americans to see through Trump's attempt to reduce our thinking.
