Letters to the editor: Dismissal of classified documents case is another victory for Trump

To the editor: I once had a security clearance and took the responsibilities associated with that clearance very seriously throughout my career and into retirement. Loose lips DO sink ships.

What Judge Aileen Cannon did, All charges dismissed in Trump classified documents caseMy blood boils. I suppose that, according to Cannon's twisted legal logic, Aldrich Ames, who is serving a life sentence for espionage, should be freed. And Robert Hanssen, who died in prison while serving a life sentence for espionage, should have been a free man. And Edward Snowden can return to the US from Russia with impunity. We have really fallen down the rabbit hole.

Things are going well for Trump: first he escapes an accident in Butler, Pennsylvania, and now Judge Aileen Cannon, whom he appointed, dismisses the classified documents case because of a flimsy excuse about the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith.

The evidence was there, dozens of boxes full of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Who can hope for justice when the cards have been dealt?

Richard C. Armendariz, Huntington Beach

Whoever coined the phrase “crime doesn’t pay” surely didn’t know Trump. Once again, Trump has gotten out of another big mess and will not pay or take responsibility for his actions in the case of the classified documents.

As usual, the American people will pay the enormous bill they have created when it comes to the consequences and erosion of the rule of law and the imbalance in the scales of justice. When a person believes that they are above the law and unchecked and continues to be emboldened by the power of their followers, it is a serious warning sign and a danger to democracy.

Trump may think he is above the law, but he does not deserve contempt when it comes to decency and respect for humanity. For now, his temporary victories only strengthen him. Convicted criminals should never be allowed to be president!

To the editor: The first words that come to mind are Vin Scully's during his call when Kirk Gibson hit a home run for the Dodgers in the 1988 World Series: “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.”

The Supreme Court, Aileen Cannon, Donald Trump, Project 2025… where does it all end?
