LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: BALD EAGLE CHICKS SUNNY AND GIZMO shine at a dark moment for conservationists

To the editor: All those many devotees of life and the times of the Eagles Calvas Jackie and Shadow, and their unconditional attempts to bring offspring to this cruel world are delighted to know and even see the progress of their now named girls (“meet Sunny and Gizmo, the residents of Eagle Calva de Big Bear”, April 2). This is something to applaud in a dark political time, when much of our natural world is being intensely challenged by the financial cuts of the administration to the services that try to address the serious concerns of the loss of biodiversity, climate change and the damage of great agriculture in our stressed resources of land, water and air.

It is tempting to fall into fatalism when it comes to recognizing that most of our current practices are unsustainable and the hopes that these immediate obvious needs are not only not addressed, but that our legislature will deliberately ignore. The majority of those in the population who deeply care about these problems and support the measurable change in these areas and support continuous conservation and scientific research can only continue defending our government officials that our votes will count in the next elections.

Meanwhile, the good news about the appointment of the chicks of Eagle Calva could inspire young people to join this fight for a better future for all large and small creatures and for our land in danger.
