Letters to the Editor: A More Personal Remembrance of Frank Gehry's Kindness and Warmth

to the editor: Many well-deserved tributes were written about Frank Gehry in the December 6 Los Angeles Times, but I have one on a more personal level (“Frank Gehry, master architect who transformed the urban landscape of Los Angeles, dies at 96” December 5). In the early 2000s, when Disney Hall was still a work in progress, the head of Santa Monica High School's art department was able to secure a tour for her students of Gehry's exclusive art studio in Santa Monica. They invited me to accompany her on the tour.

Gehry himself welcomed the students with enthusiasm and warmth. In the center of the room was a model of Disney Hall, which he explained in great detail. He was generous with his time and answered all questions, encouraging students to consider a career in architecture. I think the students in that room realized they were in the presence of a teacher and, hopefully, they will remember his kindness as I do today.

To the editor: I pass by Gehry's residence in Santa Monica every day of my life (unless there's a big downpour, which isn't very often). His house, which filled our common neighborhood with architecture unlike anything we had ever envisioned before, draws people from all over the world to experience something truly unique. His legacy will continue to thrive in our neighborhood and beyond.

Thank you, Frank, for giving us something completely unique that continues to change every time we see it.
