Katie Porter is qualified to be governor. Don't believe in memes

to the editor: The uproar over Katie Porter's interview is fueled by fake social media-driven memes that attempt to say she lacks the qualifications to serve as governor (“'I don't want all of this to go on camera,' gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter says in testy interview,” October 8). The interviewer apparently expected her to calmly recite dull platitudes. When she refused, elements of the Democratic establishment and her Republican enemies quickly denounced Porter and attempted to discredit her candidacy.

California Democrats, don't believe it. Today's politics demand a vigorous challenge and a governor capable of countering President Trump's autocratic policies. It is necessary to restore the vitality of international trade, the cornerstone of our economy. Labor markets and flows, disrupted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and immigration restrictions, require stabilization. And Porter's track record makes her the ideal person to address one of our most pressing issues: housing availability and affordability.

In times like these, we need a person with democratic convictions and principles willing to confront the reactionary extremism of Trump and his henchmen. For several important reasons, Katie Porter fits the bill.
