'It's happening again': Trump gets off scot-free as media scrutinizes Harris

To the editor: Remember how in 2016 the media allowed Donald Trump to come to power by not clearly stating why he should not be president? It's happening again.

Every time I see a headline about how Vice President Kamala Harris isn't detailed enough about her policies and that she's not this or that, I think: Why don't they say the same about Trump?

Every article should directly compare what each candidate says. If Harris is vague, how does Trump articulate his position? If he doesn't articulate it directly, is Project 2025 substituting for policy ideas?

Moreover, it might be useful to question Trump's age and consistency as regularly and in detail as the media did with President Biden.

Finally, a story to tell: Everyone is praising Trump's economic policies, but what are economies like under a dictator? Are the working class treated fairly? If so, I have good news: I might even vote for Trump. However, Americans have no idea what it's like to live under a dictator, so help us understand.

To the editor: Lanhee J. Chen criticizes Harris for changing her policy positions, but politicians do this all the time.

Trump has shifted his stance on issues including abortion, immigration, China, cryptocurrency and a variety of other topics. He has rejected the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, a wish list of right-wing ideas, though some of them are included in his own political platform.

Even Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who was once Chen's boss, has changed his views on everything from gun control to climate change.

It is worth remembering that “absurd consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Citizens and donors change their opinions and politicians respond. The economy is dynamic, so policy prescriptions must follow suit. Voters, including undecided voters, know that politicians are rarely consistent.

To the editor: First of all, I won't be voting for Trump, and there's nothing in Harris's resume that would encourage me to do so, either.

The otherwise good and articulate columnists often write articles criticizing Trump over and over again. Enough, we get the idea. Some of the criticism may be a little entertaining, but it doesn't provide any useful information to us independents.

Perhaps they could dig a little deeper and write compelling reasons to vote for Harris.

To the editor: I had to laugh when I read the article examining Harris's views on police.

To better compare them to Trump’s record, let’s start with the day he sparked a mob insurrection when his MAGA lunatics attacked the police. For hours he watched television and didn’t lift a finger.
