Is 'heartlessness' in America behind Kamala Harris' call?

To the editor: Perhaps the most powerful factor driving millions of voters right now is “starvation of the heart” (“The honeymoon is over. Harris must start making the case for her presidency,” editorial, Aug. 23).

Imagine a nation in which a sense of the finer things in life — warmth, empathy, friendship, and appreciation of beauty — is replaced by an insistence on resentment and revenge. As if that were not punishing enough, imagine that these messages emanate from a source whose primary goal is to dominate our mental lives at all hours of the day and night.

Consider, then, that someone who calls America a “Third World hellhole” accuses his opponents of hating America, even as they praise our capacity for self-correction.

Ultimately, the 2024 election comes down to reaffirming our national identity by removing the monstrous presence of former President Trump. So, whether our point of reference is Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, John McCain, Barack Obama, or Joe Biden, we will get back on track with our historic hopes and best intentions.

To the editor: Well, hurrah for the Democrats! They have a presidential candidate who got there by ticking all the boxes, even though nobody actually voted for her.

People who are now excited about this seem to completely ignore or not care about the fact that Harris has yet to give two interviews or a press conference, clearly because she doesn't want voters to know anything about her record or policies.

This reminds me a bit of Joe Biden’s “basement strategy” in 2020. That only worked for him because of COVID-19. One of these days, Harris will have to face the consequences, whether she wants to or not.
