If Uneven SAT Returns, Bring Test Prep to All High Schools

To the editor: I was extremely dismayed to see the Times editorial board advocate for bringing back the SAT in college admissions.

While the editorial board raises the same valid points in identifying other flaws around the college admissions process, the significant gap in access to preparation resources between students of different backgrounds provides a vast population of students with a clear disadvantage. and undeniable.

Until all public schools include SAT preparation in their curriculum, the test will continue to present an unequal measure for advancement and should not be used.

To the editor: Elite universities such as MIT, Brown, and Dartmouth “found that SAT scores were extremely effective in predicting whether students would be successful in college.”

Journalists often write about the numbers and percentages of students admitted to the University of California and California State University systems each year. We rarely read about dropout and graduation rates.

Maybe if journalists reported on the dropout rate of students who took the SAT versus those who didn't, it might make our state colleges and universities reconsider.

It is not the admitted number; is the number of those who graduate with a significant degree and are able to compete on the world stage.
