If Trump wants to cut funding, why don't we keep our taxes here?

to the editor: Since California provides approximately $83 billion more in taxes of what it receives in funds from Washington, said Governor Gavin Newsom, if it is legally feasiblemust direct the state treasurer to withhold all federal income taxes from state employees and keep the funds in California (“Trump administration says it will cut $8 billion for climate projects in blue states, including California hydrogen hub,” October 1). This would include all state employees, UC and state university system employees, and all income taxes from California retirement funds, such as CalSTRS.

The only thing the Trump administration understands is money. By directing these funds to the California treasury, the federal government would most likely find itself in a liquidity crisis within a short period of time. And perhaps the next step would be for California's treasurer to send forms to private employers to send collected federal taxes to the state.
