How to get Donald Trump on stage for a debate with Kamala Harris

To the editor: Former President Trump is correct in saying that the agreed-upon debate is supposed to be between him and President Biden, not Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee. (“Trump Pulls Out of Scheduled Debate With Harris, Saying He Wants to Face Off on Fox News,” August 3)

So Biden should arrive on September 10 ready to debate Trump on ABC, but Harris should be close by. When Biden speaks, instead of answering the question, he should always say the same thing:

“This is ridiculous! I know our agreement is to debate each other, but I’m retiring in four months. Kamala took my place and she should do it now. What do you think, Donald? Let’s bring her in here.”

I know I'm being silly, but it's not as silly as Trump running for president three times.

To the editor: We already knew Trump was a bully, a liar and a convicted felon. Now we can add to the list that he is also a coward who is afraid to take on a younger candidate whom he cannot intimidate.

Without his MAGA followers supporting him and believing every lie he tells, he puts his tail between his legs and wants to return to Fox News where they will nod along with everything he says.

I have not yet heard him talk about what his policies would be, other than installing in all government positions people loyal only to him and not to the citizens or the Constitution. Is this the kind of person we want in power as president?

To the editor: Trump is obviously scared, but he may be right that a debate on ABC, with which he has pending litigation, could present a “conflict of interest.”

For her part, Harris knows that proposing a debate on Fox News — with its conservative bias and raucous live audience — is a strategy straight out of Trump's playbook.

Since neutrality seems to be a topic of discussion, I propose that the debate be moderated by the British Broadcasting Corp., or BBC. Surely the former president has no problem with the BBC, does he?

And if Trump insists on a live audience, I'd be much more comfortable with the BBC hand-picking the attendees than Fox News.

To the editor: Harris should flatly reject Trump's offer to debate on Fox.

Instead, he should propose that it be held on the steps of the New York courthouse when he is sentenced on the 34 charges against him. When asked about its abrupt cancellation, an appropriate response would be: “It's a crime.”
