Here's what's so worrying about the Trump-Vance abortion dance

To the editor: In all the op-eds about abortion rights and whether we should finally have a law passed by Congress enshrining Roe v. Wade on a national level, why does no one mention that this is the only example of a right that does not apply equally to men and women based simply on where they live? (“They Changed the Wording in the Party Platform, but the GOP Still Wants to Ban Abortion,” Op-Ed, July 18, and “This Is One of the Biggest Lies Trump and Republicans Are Telling Women Voters,” Op-Ed, July 21).

Mention an example of a right that men have and that can be violated or eliminated depending on the state they are in.

This is not a question of abortion, but of equality with respect to individual bodily integrity.

The November election should be about supporting women's right to autonomy and who appoints federal court judges. If our country stands for anything, it's that our constitutional rights are universal.

To the editor: The truth is that in most cases, the mother makes the unilateral decision to end the life of a genetically different human embryo or fetus that, if properly cared for, would develop into a healthy human being. That person would share her and her partner's genetics, but we talk about abortion as if the father's thoughts and wishes were irrelevant.

Abortion is a barbaric strategy to deal with a problem that should have been planned for from the beginning. Sexual freedom entails responsibility.

Vice President Kamala Harris needs to set the tone for how she plans to address this issue if she wants to earn my respect. Pregnancy is important for both the father and the mother. Do men have any rights?

To the editor: As a daily reader of The Times from cover to cover, I was thrilled to see two opinion pieces on abortion.

But I do have a problem with columnist Robin Abcarian, who wrote: “It is a minority — the vocal Christian right to which Trump owes his control of the Republican Party — that does not want women to ever have abortions, period.”

As a Christian, I do not like this wording. I belong to a liberal church in San Juan Capistrano.

The psychological manipulation by former President Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), is an attempt to win over suburban women. The Republican Party is doing everything it can to mislead voters about its stance on abortion.

To the editor: After watching the Republican Party convention, I have a question for Republican readers. But first let me explain.

Growing up, I was exposed to a scammer (a friend's father), and it's worth repeating what he told me: When a scammer lies to you, it's because he thinks you're stupid or ignorant.

My question is: What do you say to a scammer when he insists—I mean, insists loudly—that his lies are true? Hint: It's not that you're ignorant.
