to the editor: It's hard to imagine anything more dangerous and unnecessary than spraying deadly herbicides into Southern California's open flood control channels or “washes” (“Fear that herbicides are poisoning Orange County streams explodes on social media,” March 1). Spraying the chemicals found in Roundup herbicide not only endangers joggers, cyclists, and residents of nearby communities, but the waste flows directly into the ocean.
The spraying of toxic herbicides in San Juan Creek must stop immediately. Surely Orange County Public Works officials could use what San Diego County officials are using: humans with equipment to manually manage the growth and removal of plants. Destroying these vital ecosystems with toxic chemicals that end up in the ocean is careless and irresponsible.
