Greg Abbott's pardon sends a chilling message: laws are not for us

To the editor: It's hard for me to imagine a more repugnant pardon than the one Texas Governor Greg Abbott granted to the convicted killer of a Black Lives Matter protester.

But Abbott was simply parroting the same message that former President Trump sent by pardoning so many convicted criminals among his supporters: Laws are made to regulate the actions of progressives, not conservatives.

I understand. Something that voters will remember in the next election.

To the editor: Let me understand it.

Most people in Texas are allowed to openly carry a firearm in public. But according to Governor Abbott, Texans can also shoot anyone carrying a gun if that person approaches you, talks to you, or displays any behavior they believe forces you to “stand your ground.”

This is wilder than the Wild West ever was. Dodge City, Tombstone, Abilene, and Deadwood had various forms of gun control that current Second Amendment advocates would vociferously claim are unconstitutional.

And they say California is full of crazy people.

To the editor: Abbott's pardon is another example in this country of a white minority pretending to have a political philosophy.

Abbott and his ilk are not politicians, they are not leaders and they certainly do not have the public interest in mind. Being in control is his only motivation.
