Food waste isn't just a Thanksgiving problem. Lawmakers must act

To the editor: In addition to fueling climate change, how about exacerbating drought? A lot of water went into growing the food Americans throw away after Thanksgiving. (“Americans will throw away 316 million pounds of food on Thanksgiving. Here's how it fuels climate change,” Nov. 26)

When it comes to food waste, our lawmakers should address the millions of pounds of food thrown away by supermarkets. The produce and meat displays are constantly kept immaculate; Anything that doesn't look good is usually discarded. The less food we need to grow, the less water we will use to grow it.

What about airlines serving meals? Extra meals are provided on flights and discarded after landing. Whether you want it or not, a bun with butter is given as a gift. The cows that produce the milk for that butter are a major source of methane emissions.
