To the editor: The purpose of good governance is to serve people. This costs money, which is generally provided through taxes. The trick is to find a better balance than the deficit spending.
Rugy's contributing writer presents the classic conservative argument that the government is too large, inefficient and expensive (“Trump's budget would block the expenditure and deficits of great government.” May 8). Therefore, the cure is to cut it with a chain saw, since even President Trump's musk effort is insufficient. Although effectiveness and efficiency should always continue aggressively, a good government must work to protect our environment and provide people's health and well -being.
In addition, it is the government support of education and research that made us a world leader and gave us an economy that has been the envy of the world. The other side of the equation is to provide sufficient fair taxes to pay it. Allowing the 2017 tax reduction so that the rich expire would take part of the road.

To the editor: The writer states that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are the main drivers of our current debt. Nonsense! Since the 1970s until today, federal expenditure has passed About 20% of GDP – Highest in recession, lower in peace and prosperity. During that same period, federal income has oscillated between 14.5% and 20% of GDP, according to the Fiscal Policy Center. As he approached 20%, he was affected by Ronald Reagan's tax cuts, George W. Bush's tax cuts and, more recently, President Trump's tax cuts. Today's structural deficits are the direct result of irresponsible republican tax cuts, not expenses.
