To the editor: Reading the Times’ lengthy article about the upcoming protests planned for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, I searched in vain for an explanation of why these “tens of thousands” of protesters did not bring their entirely legitimate concerns about Palestinians, reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, police repression in minority communities, the treatment of immigrants and the state of our climate to the Republican convention in Milwaukee last month.
Do they really think their concerns are more threatened by the Democrats? Do the organizers not know how to get to Milwaukee?
How counterproductive it is to put on a show of conflict at the doors of the same political party that could really do something to improve these injustices.
“I don’t think there is anything to lose,” Hatem Abudayyeh, one of the protest’s lead organizers, said in his article. What about the November elections? A GOP victory would be a huge loss for everything these groups care about.

To the editor: Reading this article filled me with despair. I remember the 1968 Democratic convention very clearly, and it seems we are headed in an equally wrong direction.
Well-intentioned pro-Palestinian protesters are falling into a trap that could well lead to the re-election of former President Trump, who has threatened mass deportations and his supporters have even talked about migrant camps.
Be careful what you wish for.
