to the editor: Columnist Jonah Goldberg says Democrats have a common goal: stopping President Trump (“Despite infighting, Democrats can still unite around a common goal.” October 21). Let us not “work on behalf of all the American people.” Let us not “use negotiation and compromise to advance our position.” But “let's do everything we can to block Trump and the Republicans.”
Partisan politics have always been present. Differences on issues and policies are a norm. But targeting one person shows complete disregard for our electoral process and the will of the people.
In 1861, the South largely had a single goal: preserve slavery. This position led to the Civil War and, ultimately, the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Democrats have expressed such strong hatred of Trump that he confronted two murder attempts last year, in addition to the murder of Charlie Kirk. Democrats' continued rhetoric against Trump has deepened the division in our nation.
