Chemo, surgery, radiation: What the HPV vaccine could have prevented

To the editor: I was diagnosed with cervical cancer four years ago and I thank the human papillomavirus, or HPV, for it. (“Trust the survivors: you don't want cancer caused by HPV. Get vaccinated,” letters, December 31)

I had a full hysterectomy followed by a round of chemotherapy and radiation. Fortunately, the surgery and treatment were successful.

It turns out that the tenacious and pernicious virus is still in my system, so I must be on the lookout for other scourges, including anal cancer.

I encourage anyone who is eligible for the HPV vaccine to get it.
