Blame tax cuts for the expansion of the deficit by the Republican Party

To the editor: Virtually all comments on the “a great Big Beautiful bill” that approved the camera notes of the significant expansion of the deficit it creates. Few of them, however, recognize the fact that it is the tax cut of the bill that is largely responsible for it. Columnist Jonah Goldberg is the last of a long list of commentators to blame rights (that is, Social Security and Medicare) as the main drivers of the deficit and not mention in all tax cuts (“Baby Boom, Baby Bust and the 'Big Beautiful Bill”, “ May 27).

The last time there was a balanced budget in the United States was when Bill Clinton was president. That budget was the result of the tax increases he obtained in Congress during his first year. It is curious how no one seems to remember that, instead, to prove Newt Giningrich and the Republicans for it.

Deficits are the result of the difference between income and expenses. The increase in income would reduce or eliminate the deficit, but few people are willing to recognize it.
