To the editor: After former Councilman José Huizar's corruption scandal and former Councilman Kevin de León's lengthy apology tour, some District 14 voters hoped that Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, a City Council outsider and tenants' rights attorney, would provide encouragement. of fresh air that the district so much needs.
One of his first acts, hiring lobbyist Lauren Hodgins as chief of staff, just took that breath away.
While Jurado may not have accepted campaign contributions from developers, it now appears the developers could be pulling the strings from inside her office while she learns how City Hall works.
Some might say this is a simple mistake by a political novice. But with the history of Council District 14, this could also be a calculated move by developers and other groups to return to the good old days of business in Northeast Los Angeles.
