After Iowa, is there any trump card that Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis can play?

To the editor: I found Robin Abcarian's analysis of Monday's Iowa caucuses highlighting the delusional behaviors of candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis to hit the nail on the head.

However, history will be the final arbiter of this dangerous and unprecedented moment for our country's fragile democracy. In fact, Trump's cult-like followers continue to accept and savor all the vile, putrid garbage he feeds them. Unfortunately, its toxicity has infected approximately half of the country's population.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was widely criticized during the 2016 presidential campaign for saying that half of Trump's supporters belong to a “basket of deplorables.” Recent years clearly show that the woman was not wrong.

Instead, you grossly underestimated how many of these aforementioned deplorables there are.

To the editor: In the Republican Party primary battles, falsehood still reigns.

Both Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, and Florida Governor DeSantis harbor fervent but unspoken hopes that Trump's sweeping legal challenges will derail his candidacy, one way or another.

Openly sharing that hope would be tantamount to political suicide; Trump's loyal legions will not back anyone who dares to question his eligibility for re-election.

But Haley and DeSantis could soon play, well, a trump card. Polls increasingly suggest that both have a much better chance than Trump of prevailing over Biden. It's a good bet that one or both will soon accept and, well, trumpet that coming truth.
