To the editor: The history of columnist Jonah Goldberg on the proposal of New America Party of Elon Musk does not mention what, in principle, would be the best way to add a significant national third party: we should change our voting system of the vote of plurality to the approval vote (“Elon Musk's game is a long shot”, July 8). If three or more candidates run for a position, in this case, president of the United States, voters can “approve” as many candidates as they want. The winner of the election is the candidate with the greatest amount of approval.
In this system, one does not “waste” a vote voting for the third -party candidate because you can still vote for a Democrat or Republican. The approval vote is currently used in some local political elections, as well as in the elections in a variety of organizations. In theory, changing the presidential electoral system to the approval of the voting would not be a constitutional challenge while the Electoral College remains in place. Unfortunately, because the vote of approval would weaken the power of both main parties, we will not see this change, which would strengthen democracy, in the short term.
