Woman praised for refusing to knit a wedding dress for a friend

A woman is being praised for standing her ground and refusing to knit a wedding dress for her friend.

Hoping to confirm that she made the right decision, the woman posted on Reddit's popular Am I The A**hole forum about her situation. She began by explaining that she had previously given cute crochet items to her friends for her big day.

“To make a long story short, I started a slightly strange tradition in my friend group,” the Reddit user wrote. “I can't go to weddings much because I have kids, so I've been making hand crochet things for my friends to wear mostly small things like scrunchies and gloves.”

Most of her friends love her handmade gifts, she said, and she appreciates the effort and care that goes into making them. Each project can take you anywhere from a few hours to days, depending on the size.

Unfortunately, one of the Redditor's friends didn't consider the time it would take to finish a crochet project.

She said: “Well, we found out that my friend Jay is getting married in April and we are all very happy for her, but it seems like it's short notice.

“Jay asked me if I could knit her a wedding dress that looked like her grandmother's, since the original dress was lost in a fire this summer,” the woman continued.

“She wants everything to be exactly like her grandmother's dress, right down to the color of the thread.”

The Reddit user was initially “baffled” by the request. Knitting an entire wedding dress would take months and finding the right color yarn would be difficult, he said. When she asked to see a photo of the original dress, the crochet enthusiast knew she wouldn't be able to finish it in time for the wedding.

“There is no way even a crochet expert could do that in less than two months,” she wrote. “I politely explained to him that he couldn't make the entire dress in such a short time, but he could make her a nice shawl, with the same stitch to pay homage to his grandmother's dress.”

Much to the Reddit user's disappointment, her friend called her a “bitch” for refusing to make the dress. Her friend allegedly accused her of “playing favorites” because she had done what her other girlfriends wanted for her wedding.

“Our friends are a little divided, everyone who does DIY at home agrees with me that Jay's due dates are unrealistic,” the Redditor added. “My other friends seem divided because, on the one hand, this dress meant so much more to her than just a normal project, and because I should have handled it more carefully.”

Other crochet experts chimed in, noting that they too would have been overwhelmed by the request.

“As a former crochet fan, my wrists hurt thinking about doing so much work,” one reader confessed. “Even if you had all the materials sourced and ready to go, it's a full-time job to sew it in two months!”

Another proclaimed: “Basically lace via crochet. “That is what is expected, and it can easily take more than a year to achieve.”

“Seriously! Materials, workmanship, design, pattern, accessories and modifications… I would make a rough estimate of the cost and show it to her. It will be astronomical and it will blow her away,” a fourth suggested. “Of course, she will think you are exaggerating spending no matter what you say.”

One passionate Reddit user exclaimed: “WHAT??? This was not done on the train while she (the knitter) was listening to an audiobook! This is crazy.”
