New York Magazine Reporter Olivia Nuzzi was recently suspended after revealing her “personal relationship” with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Since joining the magazine’s staff in 2017, the 31-year-old reporter has earned a reputation for her vivid, incisive reporting on political figures as well as her deeply researched presidential campaign stories. At times, Nuzzi has become part of the story, such as when she wrote about text messages she sent to Rudy Giuliani in 2019 or when she was criticized for trespassing into the office of former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski in 2018.

He also had a cameo in Billions and recently launched a documentary series called “Working Capital” with Bloomberg, interviewing people like billionaire Mark Cuban, among others.

In recent months, she has published articles about the Democrats’ “conspiracy of silence to protect” around then-presidential candidate Biden and a recent, illuminating conversation with former President Donald Trump, which was one of the magazine’s cover stories last week. Each of these articles has since been updated with a note from the publication, stating that all of Nuzzi’s 2024 articles are under review.

On Thursday, the 31-year-old journalist was suspended from her job by the magazine over what it called a “violation of our readers’ trust,” according to a statement. By engaging in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while reporting on the campaign, the publication claimed that Nuzzi violated the publication’s editorial standards.

They added: “Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued covering the presidential campaign.”

New York Magazine editor David Haskell wrote in an article published Friday: memorandumclaiming the publication planned to use an “independent third party” to review Nuzzi’s 2024 writing to see if there is anything the publication should disclose or correct with the journalist’s “relationship” with the 70-year-old anti-vaxxer coming to light.

It added that its findings will influence its “final disciplinary decision” regarding Nuzzi. However, this comes after the magazine conducted an internal review of Nuzzi’s writing for the 2024 campaign and found “no inaccuracies or evidence of bias.”

Haskell noted that the magazine learned of the relationship “a few days ago” and quickly “pulled her out of the 2024 campaign.” While the magazine did not publicly reveal who the subject was, journalist Oliver Darcy identified him as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in his Status newsletter. Darcy cited an anonymous source who alleged that the relationship did not begin until after Nuzzi’s profile of the then-2023 candidate was published.

At the time, she wrote a lengthy profile of Kennedy, when the politician was still running as an independent candidate for the 2024 presidential race. She described how she accompanied him on a walk with their dogs, as well as how she traveled with him and his dogs in a beat-up minivan. She later revealed to the magazine that the “personal relationship” lasted from December 2023 until August.

In a statement shared with several media outlets, CNN toward The New York TimesNuzzi acknowledged having a relationship with one of his sources, but denied that it had gotten physical.

“Earlier this year, the nature of some communications between me and a former reporter became personal,” he said. “During that time, I did not report directly on the subject or use him as a source. The relationship was never physical, but it should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I have disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.”

Although the Kennedy heir has not made any public comments about the alleged relationship, a spokesman for the politician said The New York Times He only met the journalist “once in his life for an interview that she requested and which resulted in a sensationalist article.”
