Weight gain is one of the greatest health concerns in the current era, since obesity is more common in women than in men. Many women often wonder what their ideal weight should be. While approaching obesity in an event of the media, the renowned Dr. Sk Sarin, director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi, shared the way to discover the ideal weight for women based on their height.
Causes of obesity
Obesity is a generalized problem among women in India. The main causes include an unhealthy lifestyle, hormonal changes, reduced physical activity, poor nutrition and excessive consumption of fried foods. After a certain age or subsequent delivery, women tend to gain weight rapidly, which makes weight control challenging.
Weight calculation using BMI
In medical science, the body mass index formula (BMI) is used to determine if a person has low weight or overweight. However, the BMI is applicable only for adults, not for children. First, measure its height in centimeters, then subtract 100 of it. For example, if the height of a woman is 160 cm, subtracting 100 60 kg leaves, which is considered the ideal weight.
Dr. Sarin also mentioned that people with family history of serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer should aim to be 5 to 6 kg lighter than the calculated weight. This adjustment helps maintain general health.
