What is insulin resistance? Learn all about this medical condition

This medical condition can sometimes prove fatal.

It is also the most common cause of type 2 diabetes.

Our food is broken down into glucose in the human body. Glucose is considered to be the main source of energy for the body. After glucose is extracted from the food a person has consumed, it enters the bloodstream and sends a signal to the pancreas to release insulin. Once the insulin is released, it regulates the amount of glucose that enters the muscles, fats, and liver cells. When glucose moves from the blood into the cells and the level of glucose in the bloodstream starts to decrease, the pancreas automatically stops the production of insulin. This is a normal phenomenon that takes place inside our body. Dr. Sonia Rawat, Head of the Preventive Health Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, told News 18 in an interview that insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. This hormone is considered to control the blood sugar level in the human body.

He explained that when insulin sensitivity starts to decrease and muscles, fat, and liver do not respond properly to insulin, the phenomenon is known as insulin resistance. It is also known as impaired insulin sensitivity. This medical condition can sometimes be temporary, while at other times it can turn fatal. It is also the most common reason for suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Sonia further explained that researchers and scientists are yet to discover the exact reason behind the cause of insulin resistance. Excess body fat and lack of physical activity can lead to this medical condition. Consuming highly processed foods, high in carbohydrates, and foods with saturated fats can also lead to insulin resistance. There is no specific taste to determine the condition. It is detected through a blood sugar test.

According to experts, a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet, and regular physical activity can help prevent this medical condition. To prevent this problem, one should avoid eating foods that contain large amounts of carbohydrates, red meat, and sugary foods. Try to monitor blood sugar levels regularly to detect this medical condition.
