Under certain conditions, toxins can form in the water due to copper, which can harm the body in various ways.
You should be aware of the benefits of drinking water stored in a copper container. Doctors also suggest drinking water from a copper jug as it helps keep the stomach clean and detoxifies the entire body. It is also said to give a natural glow to the skin, with anti-aging properties, and there are many more benefits. But have you ever heard about how doing the same thing incorrectly can harm your body?
Yes, if you drink water from a copper jug incorrectly, it can cause harm rather than benefit. This is because, under certain conditions, toxins can form in the water due to copper, which can harm the body in various ways.
Dr Mukta Vashisht, chief dietician at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explains that moderation is key. Excessive intake of anything, even beneficial substances, can cause harm. Copper is essential for our bones, brain, skin, tissues and immune system. The recommended daily intake of copper is about 10 milligrams. If we consume less copper, it can impair brain function, increase the risk of heart disease and weaken the nervous system.
On the other hand, excess copper can accumulate in various parts of the body, causing potentially fatal consequences.
Dr. Vashisht further explains that when water is stored in a copper container, some of the copper leaches into it. A small amount may not cause harm, but improper cleaning of the container can lead to copper toxicity. When this water enters the body, it can affect multiple organs, similar to the effect of poison.
The harmful effects
Dr Vashisht warns that drinking water from a dirty copper jug regularly can lead to a build-up of toxins in the body. These toxins enter the bloodstream and can travel to vital organs, including the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, and heart, causing damage.
The initial impact will be on the stomach, causing stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Prolonged consumption of toxic copper water can cause headaches, dizziness, and yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Dr. Vashisht advises that if you clean the copper vessel daily and drink its water, no harm will come to you. Many people tend to clean their copper vessels once a week or only when dirt is visible, but this habit can lead to serious health problems.
Copper vessels should be cleaned every day, ideally with salt and lemon. It should become a daily routine. Also, never store hot water in a copper container. Hot water causes copper to dissolve quickly, increasing the amount that enters the water and, eventually, the stomach.
Therefore, avoid storing hot water in copper containers, especially during the winter months. Always store water at room temperature and consume within 6 to 7 hours. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the benefits of copper water without the risks.
