Travis Kelce has revealed that it was his idea to perform at his girlfriend Taylor Swift's Eras Tour show in London and that his biggest fear was dropping her during his dance routine.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end posed as one of the singer's backup dancers during her performance at Wembley Stadium on June 23. Dressed in a top hat and tails, he picked Swift up and carried her around the stage during her song “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart,” where she needs to be “revived” from the dead in order to perform.
“I was there with three professionals. With Taylor on stage there's nothing wrong with that. [I kept telling myself]“Don’t drop the baby. Hold him,” she told her brother Jason Kelce on the latest episode of her show. New Heights podcast, adding that he was also keen not to “fuck this up.”
“I initially approached Tay about the possibility of doing one of his shows,” he said. “I thought, ‘How fun would it be if I came out on one of the 1989-era bikes?’”
According to the footballer, Swift initially thought he was joking before asking him: “'Would you really be willing to do something like that?'”
Travis admitted that he was quick to embrace the idea, noting how familiar he is with the show because he’s seen it so many times. “I was like, ‘What? I’d love to do that, are you kidding me? I’ve watched the show enough, I could get a job here,’” he said. “And sure enough, she found the perfect part of the show for me to get into.”
Despite his initial idea of riding a bike, he ended up on stage in a tuxedo and top hat. “There was no bike in case I ran into someone or hit one of the dancers or something,” Travis explained. “It was the safest option.”
During his routine, Kelce was also seen powdering Swift's face and busting out some dance moves, which he admitted were inspired by Jim Carrey in the movie Dumb and Dumber.
“I always wanted to do this move, but I never knew when I should do it and when it made sense,” he said. “It’s one of my all-time favorite moves!”
He explained how much he loved the experience and praised Swift's acting skills, calling her “a true showman.”
“It was a blast,” Travis said. “It was a really fun and playful part of the show and it was like… the perfect time to go there, just be an actor and have some fun, not just with [Swift]…but the audience really tried to get everyone excited for the rest of the show. It was amazing.”
In the podcast episode, the Chiefs player also talked about how surprised he was by the crowd's reaction to his appearance.
“When everyone found out it was me, because it took everyone a second to realize, that moment was pretty shocking. I was like, ‘Oh shit,’” he said. “And you don’t realize how big that fucking stage is. It’s easily as big as a football stadium… it’s way bigger than I could have ever imagined.”
“But no, it was amazing. And I didn't let Taylor down, so that's all that really matters.”
