When it comes to interiors with a purpose, it's safe to say that the kitchen is the most worked-on room in the house.

But what if yours is best described as a gem or a pied-à-terre so small you need to come up with ways to make the most of every nook and cranny?

Look no further than our expert tips to maximise your space, without compromising on aesthetics or functionality…

Choose appliances carefully

“Maximise your space with thoughtful purchases,” suggests Zimbini Nkonjera, kitchen category manager at Hotpoint. “Opt for small, multi-purpose appliances that meet your cooking needs without taking up too much space.

“Combining undercounter appliances, such as microwaves and ovens, saves valuable counter space,” Nkonjera notes.

As he points out, many appliance brands offer a two-in-one solution, with a combined microwave and oven; not to mention the convenience of an air fryer.

“There is no need to sacrifice space or culinary creativity,” Nkonjera jokes. “Combining appliances offers the best of both worlds.”

Take advantage of the wall space

Replacing the bulky knife block and freeing up counter space with a magnetic strip that can be fixed to the wall is a more organised storage solution, according to Nkonjera. “Transform your drawers from chaotic to tidy with this simple yet brilliant solution.”

Storing items in appliances

People save space in their kitchens by storing food inside appliances, Nkonjera points out. “Ovens have become home to pots, pans and plates, and cutlery often stays in the dishwasher, even after washing is finished.”

If you're in the market for a new model, she suggests looking for those with more space; an extra shelf allows for flexibility when loading and unloading.

Get rid of the packaging

When it comes to snacks like cereal and chips, the packaging often takes up more space than necessary, says Nkonjera.

“By transferring these items to clear, stackable containers, you not only make your snacks look more appealing, but you also save valuable shelf space.

“Clear containers allow you to easily view contents and keep track of when items are running low, while stackable designs help maximize vertical space in your pantry or cabinets.

“Eliminating bulky packaging can also create a more organized and visually appealing storage solution, making it easier to find and access your favorite snacks.”

Turn the stove into space

Leaving aesthetically pleasing pots and pans on display on the stove is an unobtrusive but effective way to add a splash of colour and style to your kitchen, whilst also saving storage space, says Nkonjera.

“Not only does this add a decorative element to your kitchen, but it also keeps frequently used kitchen utensils within easy reach.”

Organize

She says one of the most convenient ways to save space is to make sure your kitchen is organized. Free up space in cupboards and keep your kitchen tidy by placing dry goods in stylish glass jars.

Plus, maximize your kitchen storage space by taking advantage of the space above your cabinets, suggests Nkonjera. “Place jars high up, freeing up the cabinets below and creating a more organized feel.”

Sink accessories

Cutting boards over the sink not only function as prep surfaces, but can also catch vegetable scraps, making cleanup easier, Nkonjera notes.

“You can also invest in over-sink drying racks to take advantage of the space above the sink to dry dishes and keep your countertops clear.”

Creative use of spaces

Another trick is to install drawers in the area under the cabinets to store flat items like baking sheets or cutting boards, says Nkonjera.

“You can also use the back of deep cabinets for items you use less frequently and install sliding or pull-out mechanisms to make them accessible.”

Install shelves above the windows

“Installing shelves above windows can be a great way to take advantage of otherwise unused space in the kitchen.

“These shelves can be used to store items that are not used frequently, such as decorative plates, glassware or cookbooks.”

“This way, you can take advantage of vertical space and keep these items out of the way while still making them easily accessible when needed,” Nkonjera notes.

“Installing shelves can also add a decorative element to the kitchen, especially if the items displayed on the shelves complement the overall aesthetic of the space.”

Use the inside of cabinet doors.

The inside of cupboard doors is often unused, but can be a valuable area for storage, Nkonjera points out.

“By placing hooks, racks, or small containers on the inside of cabinet doors, you can create additional storage space for items like measuring cups, spoons, pot lids, or even small kitchen tools.

“Not only does this free up space in your cabinets and drawers, it also keeps these items easily accessible while you cook.

“It’s a simple and effective way to maximize storage in a small kitchen without adding clutter to your countertops,” she adds.
