Known for its ability to cleanse the body and strengthen bones, kacharia offers both culinary delight and nutritional value. Its price ranges from Rs 40 to Rs 70 per kilo.

With the arrival of the rainy season, the markets of Dausa district in Rajasthan are filled with a special seasonal vegetable known as ‘Kacharia’ or ‘Kachari’. This vegetable is available only for two months in a year and is a key ingredient in traditional rural dishes.

Renowned for its ability to cleanse the body and strengthen bones, kacharia offers both culinary delight and nutritional value. Its brief appearance in the market makes it a much sought-after delicacy and if you are in Dausa, don’t miss the chance to enjoy this nutritious and delicious vegetable while it is in season.

Kacharia, or kachri, grows singly in the fields during the rainy season, especially under kharif cultivation. The plant has a cylindrical structure, which spreads along the ground or climbs to some height with some kind of support. The vegetable is small, round and light green in colour and is usually found as a bush in the fields.

This vegetable can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: cooked, roasted or simply enjoyed as a fresh dish. The seeds it contains are also delicious and are cooked along with the vegetable to enhance its flavour. Its natural growth and various preparation methods make it a popular seasonal delicacy.

According to Dr Ravindra Kumar, an Ayurvedic expert from Dausa district, kacharia is a rich source of calcium and vitamins. It is not just a seasonal delicacy but also a powerhouse of medicinal benefits.

“This vegetable helps strengthen muscles and relieve common digestive problems like stomach gas and constipation. It also helps detoxify the body, liver and kidneys by removing accumulated impurities. For older people, incorporating Kacharia into their diet can provide significant health benefits, improving overall well-being,” said Dr. Kumar.

According to vegetable seller Swarup, the price of kacharia ranges between Rs 40 and Rs 70 per kilo. This price is due to its limited availability as the vegetable is only available in the market for two months during the rainy season.
