'Smile 2' | Anatomy of a scene

“Hello, I'm Parker Finn. I am the writer, director and one of the producers of “Smile 2”. This scene takes place in the second half of the film, and we are with the character of Skye Riley, a pop star played by Naomi Scott. She is the main character of the film. And we jump to this scene when she's at peak paranoia. So in this scene, Skye encounters this group of smilers. We had never made a full group before. It seemed like something new and really exciting to do in this movie. So this moment where they chase her down the hallway. My production designer, Lester Cohen, and I had designed this hallway with mirrors because we knew that by sending this horde of dancers down the hallway, all the reflections were going to exponentially increase the number of faces, arms, and limbs we see. These dancers I worked with and my choreographer, Celia Rowlson-Hall, it was an incredible collaboration to create something that felt like a menacing attack, but at the same time like dance. For most of the scene, we had 14 dancers and they all performed this choreography, but they also all had to smile at all times. So it was really about training them, how to do the smile, but also how to hold it while doing all this movement. But we also have Naomi, who is doing choreography, but so that she doesn't look like choreography, like she's suddenly being attacked and doesn't know what's going to happen next.
