Richard Marx recently had an awkward moment with the Duke of Sussex.
The “Don't Mean Nothing” singer was performing at the One805!Live concert on Friday, a charity event hosted by Kevin Costner, when he accidentally missed Prince Harry's attempt to congratulate him.
As he walked off stage, Marx nearly walked past the royal before someone caught his eye. Marx's wife, Daisy Fuentes, posted a clip of the interaction on her Instagram Story.
“Richard? Prince Harry,” a person can be heard introducing the couple. The two are then seen shaking hands as Harry is heard saying: “Hello! Well done,” before the clip ends.
Fuentes also posted two photos on her Instagram Story of the “Right Here Waiting” singer speaking with the Duke of Sussex.
The duke's wife, Meghan Markle, normally attends the event with him, but The mirror She reported that she was “sick” and could not be there.
The event is held annually to honor all of the first responders in the Santa Barbara area and raise money for various groups, including local firefighters and police. Costner hosted the event at his oceanside estate in Santa Barbara, California. Other notable stars included Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges and Pink.
At this year's event, Prince Harry presented an award to a local pilot, Loren Courtney. While speaking to the pilot, Harry joked about how long his racing career had taken him.
“As you've probably heard, 22 years [of] “He puts in over 10,000 hours of military service and rarely sees his family because he’s always out here flying helicopters,” she said of Courtney. “Why do you keep doing what you do?”
Courtney responded, “I do it because I love doing it and I love doing it for Santa Barbara County. It’s a rewarding experience every time we go out, whether it’s putting out fires or rescuing someone in the field or doing medical evacuations from vehicle accidents or doing police patrols and keeping citizens safe.”
The pilot talked about a search and rescue operation in Colorado for a group of skiers who had fallen off a 30-foot embankment.
“I learned in the military that you never leave anyone behind. We rescued him. He spent almost a year in intensive care and then in rehab, and now he’s walking, he’s married. In fact, he went to the top of the Grand Tetons and proposed to his girlfriend after the accident,” the pilot recalled.
“You didn’t have to rescue him again, did you?” Harry joked. “You’re one of the many heroes here tonight. There are people here tonight who are alive because of you and who have returned to their families because of you… from everyone here, thank you very much.”
Harry also presented musician Kenny Loggins with the Heart of the Community Award.
Prince Harry celebrated his 40th birthday on September 15 and the Prince and Princess of Wales publicly wished him a happy birthday on social media.
