It is believed to have taken place on the 27th night of the month of Rajab in the Islamic calendar.

The journey is described in the Quran, in Sura 17:1, as follows: “Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from the Holy Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, the surroundings of which We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. In fact, He is the one who hears, the one who sees.”
