Selena Gomez addresses 'hurtful' criticism of her relationship with Benny Blanco


Selena Gomez has spoken candidly about the criticism surrounding her relationship with Benny Blanco.

The Rare Beauty founder, 31, opened up about the intense fan reaction to her romance with songwriter and record producer Benny Blanco, which the couple confirmed in December 2023. In a wide-ranging interview with Time Magazine Posted on May 29, the former Disney Channel star downplayed the negative comments. However, he took a moment to reflect on how being in the spotlight has sometimes hurt those closest to him.

“I know what people can do to the people I love. “My own fans, who I adore and feel have shaped who I am, will tell me the most hurtful things about how I live my life,” Gomez revealed. “But he has the strength in him not to be fazed by any of that noise. He is truly impressive and I cherish every moment with him.

He added: “I don't know what the future holds, but I do know it's not going anywhere anytime soon.”

This isn't the first time the Emmy nominee has generated public interest in her love life. Gomez was in an on-and-off relationship with singer Justin Bieber from 2010 to 2018. After their split, the “Sorry” singer married his wife Hailey Bieber in September of that year.

When it comes to heartbreak, Gómez explained to Time that the only way to overcome pain is to feel every feeling and allow yourself to do so too.

“You have to go through that. You can get distracted and you can deny and deny all you want, but it will still be there,” she advised. “I just allow myself to have those days.”

Speculation about a romance between Blanco and Gómez emerged in July 2023, after they collaborated on her recent single, “Single Soon.” The couple later confirmed their relationship in December of that year, when Gomez liked a post from celebrity news fan account PopFaction. Under the outlet's Instagram post with the caption “Selena Gomez apparently confirms she's in a relationship,” she commented, “Facts.”

However, the couple immediately faced criticism when fans in the comments section called the music producer “unworthy” of her.

“I don't understand,” Gómez wrote in response. “If you really care about me. This is my happiest moment. If you don't feel free to say whatever you want. But I will never allow your words to guide my life. Ever. I've finished. If you can't accept me at my happiest moment then don't be in [my] life at all.”

He also highlighted that Blanco is the best thing that has happened to him and better than anyone he has dated. “He has treated Me better than any human being on this planet,” he told critics. “He is my absolute everything in my heart.”
