Sawan 2024: The meaning of this holy month

Sawan, or Shravan, is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. It falls in the month of Ashadha. For devout Hindus, Shravan is the most important time of the year and the holiest month of all. The entire month of Shravan is considered auspicious. It is said that one can receive the special blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu during this holy month. For devotees of Lord Shiva, the month of Shravan is especially important.

According to legend, Daksh's daughter sacrificed her life and was reborn as Parvati in the house of the Himalayan king. Parvati desired to marry Lord Shiva. For this reason, she performed penance during the month of Shravan. Lord Shiva accepted Parvati's request, pleased with her devotion. Lord Shiva prefers the month of Shravan because then he can meet Maa Parvati.

Another legend of Sawan is related to the “Samudra Manthan” or the churning of the ocean. At this event, Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison “Halahal” to save the world, turning his throat blue and receiving the name Neelkanth. During Sawan, devotees worship Shiva to thank him for his protection and blessings.
