Sabrina Carpenter revived a piece straight from Madonna's fashion archive for the 2024 MTV VMAs.
At the Sept. 11 ceremony, performers dressed in odes to their individuality and unique sound, adding metallic sparkles and tulle trains where appropriate. However, other performers used their style to pay homage to the music legends who have inspired them, which is exactly what the “Taste” singer did in a sparkling Bob Mackie couture gown.
Carpenter, who received seven nominations and took home the award for “Song of the Year” for “Espresso,” wore the dress Madonna wore to the Oscars in 1991, made by Mackie. The sparkling, beaded gown with a plunging neckline was the one the “Material Girl” wore to the coveted awards ceremony and in the famous photo of her and Michael Jackson.
With the help of her stylist Jared Ellner, Carpenter reinvented the dress in her own way, purchasing it from Tab Vintage and accessorizing it with her long blonde curls and a burgundy lip tint.
Talking with FashionAlexis Novak, owner of Tab Vintage, explained how the team of Ellner and Carpenter approached them with a clear vision of their style.
“Her stylist Jared Ellner and his team reached out to us with a really amazing mood board,” Novak told the outlet. “We sent them a selection of pieces we had in that style and we’re so happy with what they chose.”
Novak added: “It was originally designed for Madonna to wear for her performance at the Academy Awards. It was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen prefer blondes and made headlines when he used it.”
The “Please Please Please” singer was celebrated online, with fans obsessed with her look in the delicate silhouette.
“OMG! SHE LOOKS AMAZING!” wrote one excited fan on X, formerly known as Twitter. “IT LOOKS SO GOOD ON HER, LIKE IT’S NOT ‘FORCED’, IT LOOKS GOOD ON HER NATURALLY,” another added.
Carpenter isn’t the only artist to rock a vintage Bob Mackie at an awards ceremony in 2024. In fact, Miley Cyrus stunned in the designer’s archive at this year’s Grammys, sporting a gorgeous jumpsuit and fringed dress, which were just two of her five outfits from the star-studded night.
