Especially during the month of Sawan, this particular Ekadashi fast holds great significance and is known as Putrada Ekadashi. Pandit Sanjay Upadhyay, a renowned astrologer from Kashi, says that for the month of Sawan, the Ekadashi date is August 15 and it will begin at 6 a.m. The next day, August 16, it will end at 5:15 a.m. The Putrada Ekadashi fast will be observed on August 15.
According to Pandit Upadhyay, on the day of Putrada Ekadashi, the believer should take bath in the morning during the Brahma Muhurat. He should then take a fast and devote himself to the worship of Lord Vishnu. On this day, a yellow cloth should be placed on the throne of the Lord with a picture of Lord Vishnu. He should then be offered flowers, a peda and worshipped using a ghee diya.
On Putrada Ekadashi, donating things like clothes, money for food, basil plants and peacock feathers is considered very auspicious. Beliefs state that participating in charity work brings happiness and prosperity to a household. One can get rid of any financial problems for life as Goddess Lakshmi will shower her grace. How did the Putrada Ekadashi fast begin?
Pandit Upadhyay says that this is King Mahijit of the Mahishmati kingdom (present-day Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh). The king was childless and frustrated by this reality, he called a meeting with his subjects and Brahmins. They began a penance for the king's plight and met Lomas Rishi. He told them about the Putrada Ekadashi during the month of Sawan, prompting the king, his subjects and the Brahmins to observe a fast.
