American model, actress and singer Paris Jackson has revealed that she has a perforated septum due to drug use.
The 27-year-old, daughter of the late Michael Jackson, showed fans the piercing in a video using a phone flashlight, claiming it was the first time she had revealed the injury.
Jackson explained the condition, differentiating it from a deviated septum.
She told her followers: “I realize I've never dealt with this, and sometimes it can be very noticeable. “I have a very loud wheeze, if you go back to the videos you can hear it when I breathe through my nose, and that's because I have what's called a perforated septum.
“Slightly different from a deviated septum, and it's what you think it is, don't take drugs, kids, I mean, everyone is going to have the experience they need to have with life, I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, but I don't recommend it because it ruined my life.”
Despite its impact, Jackson has opted against surgical correction, explaining: “I don't want to have plastic surgery to fix it, because I've been sober for almost six years, so you have to take pills when you get surgery that gnarly, and I don't want to fuck with that.”
He added that the condition, present since he was around 20, is “shit when you're in the studio recording vocals, and I can actually stick a spaghetti (through) and do that with it.”
Earlier this year, Jackson opened up about being “clean and sober” for five years in an Instagram post, where she said she had been “an alcoholic and a heroin addict.”
She added: “It is because I am sober that today I can smile, I can make music, I can experience the joy of loving my dogs and my cat, I can feel heartbreak in all its glory, I can cry, I can laugh, I can dance, I can trust, I feel the sun on my skin and it is warm. I have discovered that life continues to happen regardless of whether I am sober or not, but today I can show up.”
The NHS states that a perforated septum can be caused by a number of factors, including cocaine use or inserting objects such as cotton swabs or fingers into the nose.
