Ilona Maher has appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit September digital issue.

Maher has gained recognition for helping the U.S. women’s rugby team win its first bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, in addition to her 2.3 million TikTok followers. The 28-year-old first gained internet fame at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for her viral images inside the Olympic Village, including her hilarious review of the cardboard beds and her thirst for fellow Olympians.

According to the publication’s editor-in-chief, MJ Day, Maher’s cover debut marks “a shift in narrative” for them.

“Ilona’s presence on our cover symbolizes a shift in the narrative, celebrating not only physical prowess but also the courage to lead, inspire and champion change,” Day said in the issue. “We couldn’t be more excited and inspired by this groundbreaking athlete and feminist trailblazer!”

She continued: “Ilona Maher’s appearance on the cover of our September digital edition is more than a celebration of her sporting achievements – it is a powerful statement. Ilona is a modern model of strength, conviction and authenticity, while also displaying the indomitable spirit of an inspiring human being. Her ability to break barriers, both on and off the field, resonates deeply with women around the world.”

Since it was revealed that the Olympian landed the cover, many people commented on both Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter, to praise the decision and mention that Maher should be the future standard for cover models and should get a “print cover.”

“Good for her! She’s a great role model, has a fantastic personality and is very tough. She’s the kind of woman you want to see on these covers!” read one comment on Instagram.

Another commenter agreed, writing: “This is amazing… but make sure to include it in the next print edition… it’s fabulous and deserves a newsstand cover!”

Other commenters highlighted Maher's body type and how seeing someone like her on the cover of a magazine would inspire girls and young women who may feel like they don't fit into “typical beauty standards.”

“…

The Olympian spoke about her body during her cover story, explaining that she was “told by people that I was masculine or something.” “But I never felt that way. But I don't think you're going to intimidate the girl who could probably hit you in a fit of rage. I love that.” [rugby] “It showed me what I can do. It showed me how capable my body is and that it’s not just a tool to be observed and objectified.”

Maher added that to be the athlete she is, her body needs to have different qualities than just being skinny. “If my cellulite was below that perfect range, I wouldn’t be doing what I could do,” she told the outlet.

“It wouldn't be so powerful because of it [so] “I really think sports have been a big help.”
