Nearly 40,000 Boxes of Tater Tots Recalled in 26 States After Plastic Pieces Found

Thousands of boxes of frozen tater tots have been recalled for possible contamination, posing significant health risks.

Idaho-based McCain Foods USA Inc recalled nearly 40,000 cases of two brands of tater tot in December, according to an enforcement report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall was due to the possible presence of fragments of hard, clear plastic in the products.

On Tuesday, the FDA raised the recall to Class II, meaning that eating the affected items may have “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the agency.

The frozen tater tots were distributed to retailers in 26 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

The recall affects 21,256 boxes of Ore-Ida Tater Tots shaped potatoes, with item number OIF00215A and UPC 1 00 72714 00215 8, as well as 17,597 boxes of Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels, with item number 1000006067 and UPC 1 07 34730 62740 0.

Recalled items can also be identified by their lot codes and production dates, which can be found here.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, consumers are urged to immediately discard the recalled tater tots or return them to the place of purchase.

The presence of foreign materials led to multiple food recalls in 2025. Last month, Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC recalled four of its ready-to-eat breakfast foods due to the possible presence of foreign materials. The recall was upgraded to Class II earlier this week.

Two types of burritos were affected, including 278 units of the Fresh to You brand Spicy Veggie Breakfast Burrito and 93 units of the Sprig & Sprout brand Spicy Breakfast Burrito.

Fresh & Ready Foods also recalled 62 units of Fresh to You brand spicy cheese, potato and egg tacos and 200 units of Evergreen Refreshments brand cheese, potato and egg tacos. The four breakfast foods were distributed to retailers in Oregon and Washington.

In October, Ventura Foods recalled 3,556 cases of its salad dressings due to the possible presence of black plastic plant material in the granulated onion in the dressings. This recall was also upgraded to Class II last month.

Some of the recalled items, distributed to seven different retailers and food courts in 42 states, included Costco Service Deli and Costco Food Court Caesar Dressing, Pepper Mill Creamy Caesar Dressing, Regal Pepper Mill Caesar Dressing and Ventura Caesar Dressing.
