Muharram 2025 Date in India: Also known as New Year Hijri or Asanh al-Hijrīyah, Islamic New Year, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar with the first day of the month of Muharram, one of the four months sacred in Islam. The Islamic New Year officially began on Wednesday, June 25, after the sighting of Muharram Crescent Moon in Saudi Arabia after Magrib's prayers.
After the announcement, the United Arab Emirates (EAU) declared a holiday on June 27, allowing Muslims to observe the occasion. The event means the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions to Medina, which leads to the establishment of the first Muslim community: Ummah.
Islamic New Year 2025: History and meaning
The Islamic New Year commemorates Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers of Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, a transformation trip that led to the base of Islam and the first Muslim community.
Muharram, one of the four months sacred in Islam, is remembered as the chronological and spiritual awakening of Islam. It promotes strong values based on a new beginning, harmony, unity, sacrifice and the search for justice and morals.
Muslims around the world observe the occasion by reciting the Sacred Book of the Koran and offering prayers, fasting and looking for forgiveness. Unlike other important Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, Muharram is observed in silence and encourages spiritual reflection.
