A mother defended her viral reaction to leaving her 7-year-old daughter at a 7-hour party.
In a popular TikTok video, Teray (@moderatelycomfy) shared how she reacted when she dropped her daughter off at a birthday party that lasted nearly 8 hours, where her 7-year-old daughter mingled with a group of 15 second- and third-graders in the birthday girl’s backyard.
She told her followers she was shocked that the parents hosting the party could handle that number of children, adding: “Like I never could.”
In the comments section of the video, people accused Teray of mom-shaming, but the content creator said that was far from her intention.
“My first reaction was something like 'Wow,'” Teray explained to People“My husband and I talked about this for almost two weeks before RSVPing. My daughter was very excited. A lot of the girls she plays hockey and softball with were going. Many of the girls are in the same class.”
She continued: “We live in a very small community. We know the family and they are fantastic. Our daughter has been there to play before and we know what the backyard is like. It’s the backyard that everyone goes to, even the adults.”
According to Teray, the luxurious backyard has everything you could want and need, and features a pool, hot tub, zip line and several trampolines. He added: “There is grass for every day use and lots of different activities on the grass. It’s a really good environment.”
Her daughter couldn't contain her excitement about the party, but Teray and her husband were a little hesitant about all that backyard extravagance.
“We had no hesitation about leaving her there for seven hours because we knew them,” he told the outlet. “Still, a lot can happen in seven hours, right? Our daughter is still wearing a life jacket. We were hesitant, we didn’t want her to be made fun of, so that was the thing we were most concerned about, safety in the water.”
The mother said she “just could never” and added: “I definitely didn’t expect to get the hearing that I did.”
“All of my videos relate to me as a mom with autism and ADHD,” she added. “My regular followers could understand what I was getting at, but I didn’t give them enough context for the random person to understand why I was saying I could never do this. Unfortunately, since many people don’t know what I usually talk about, they assumed I was judging them instead of admiring them.”
However, Teray ultimately applauded the birthday girl's mother for being attentive to details. She added that the mother was very attentive while keeping an eye on the children. She made sure everyone applied several layers of sunscreen and offered a quiet spot with a movie for anyone who needed to “decompress.”
“It was amazing,” Teray said.
