Man defends himself after buying his fiancée her dream house before she broke up with him

Not all surprises end up turning out well.

In a recent Reddit post shared in the popular “Am I the Asshole?” On the subreddit, a man explained the story of how he met his now ex-fiancee and his house-hunting process.

“We started looking for a house. EX always wanted to live at her grandparents' house on the lake near our town. “His family was forced to sell the house when his grandparents died due to an inheritance dispute,” he explained in the Reddit post.

However, the couple who ended up buying the house decided that they could no longer endure the “snowy winters” and the man decided to pool almost all of his savings to buy the house for his fiancée.

“It was going to be my surprise wedding gift, so I didn't dare tell her or anyone in her family my plans,” the post read.

A month before their wedding, his future wife went on a bachelorette party to Miami with her friends. “I'm not sure everything that happened there, part of me really doesn't want to know, but I do know that her high school boyfriend was there,” the Reddit poster clarified.

“When he returned from the trip, he broke down and confessed that he was afraid to get married and wanted to cancel it. It was a disaster. She later moved to Florida and eventually married HS BF.”

AITA for not telling my former fiancé I bought her dream house?

Although the two never married, the Reddit user still kept the house. After spending a few years fixing it up, he ended up living there full time.

Recently, they spent the Fourth of July at the house and one of the poster's relatives used photos from that vacation for his Christmas card that arrived to his ex-fiancee's cousin.

“The Saturday before the new year, EX's mother and sister were at my door. After some banter and answering their initial questions, they made an offer to buy it. I rejected. “They weren’t happy,” the story continued.

This led to a text message from his ex-partner calling him “a jerk” and that her family blames her for losing the house in the first place. Once again they asked him to sell the house, which he refused. “Now she and her family are complaining on social media that this is some kind of revenge,” the post said before asking commenters what they thought about the situation.

Many people took to the comments to express that the Reddit poster did the right thing. “Your intention was to surprise your ex with the house at the wedding. If you had called off the wedding, I would reconsider my judgment but she is the reason he doesn't have access to that house. On top of that, you've made the house yours. Enjoy!” one comment read.

Another commenter agreed, writing: “I would be petty and post on social media the contract date you bought the house and explain that if it wasn't for my ex cheating on you and leaving you for her now husband, this would have been her house as a wedding gift, but instead of it being a painful reminder of the pain she caused you, with the help of your family you were able to bond even more with your family by working together on the house and that this house will now always remain. in YOUR family for generations to come.”

The comment continued: “The audacity of your ex and his family is crazy, now after you and your family spent a decade fixing it, they are trying to get you out of the house (I guess their offer wouldn't cover the cost). of the renovations and any appreciation of the house because that seems like people like that) and when that didn't work, they took to social media to complain. NTA, I would post the entire story on social media and then block all members of that family.”
