A man broke up with his girlfriend after she told him she would cheat on him if she got a new job.

In a post shared on Reddit's Am I the Asshole forum, a man explained that he had been offered a new job abroad and had been considering taking it. He wrote that the new job would pay him significantly more than his current one, but would also take him away from home for longer periods of time.

“I currently work at a place where I make about $250,000 a year. I have a job opening where I will make $640,000 a year,” he wrote. “The caveat is that the new job is overseas. I will be gone for four months instead of four weeks.”

He added that his girlfriend was not happy about the situation and told him she did not want him to be gone for so long because she would feel lonely. But she told him that if he stayed out of work for two years, he would give them “a bright future” that would include being able to pay off all their debts, buy a house and travel more.

She told him that all those things didn't matter to her and that if he was away for too long, he might need to find some company, implying that she would cheat on him. At first, he didn't realize what she meant, telling him that he could buy a dog or make new friends at work or school.

“He then explained it to me clearly because I was stupid to think he was a decent person,” he wrote. “He said he wasn’t going to go months without sex.”

After telling her he completely understood her, he broke up with her. The girlfriend has since walked back her comments, calling and texting him saying he had misunderstood her and that he would never cheat on her.

“I’m now gone for a month straight so I’m pretty sure she’s felt ‘lonely’ before,” he wrote. “I can’t trust her and I’m not going to try to build a future with someone who can’t think of plans.”

In the comments section, people praised him for making a smart decision.

“Finally there is someone here who believes the person when they tell them exactly who they are,” one person wrote.

“It’s pretty stupid and bold to just say ‘do what I want when I want or I’ll start having sex with other people,’” another added. “If she loved him, it was crazy and cruel to play with his affections like that, and if she was using him, she was even crueler and much dumber to say what she said because it allowed him to see the mean and ugly face she had been masking.”

“You’re better off without someone threatening to cheat on you because you’re looking for a better opportunity,” another person commented. “Looks like you dodged a bullet.”

To which the original author responded: “I honestly thought it was an amazing opportunity for us to do something that most people our age can’t do. I was going to pay off his student loans.”
