Lactaid milk has been recalled in 27 states due to concerns about possible contamination with almond allergens.

HP Hood LLC, the owners of the dairy-free brand, issued a voluntary recall notice to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday (Sept. 20). The conglomerate recalled five stock-keeping units (SKUs) of 96-ounce containers “because the product may contain traces of almonds.” Almonds are not listed on the dairy-free milk’s ingredient label.

At the time of writing, HP Hood LLC has not reported any illnesses resulting from the find.

The FDA said the “affected” containers were shipped between Sept. 5 and Sept. 18 to retailers and wholesalers in Atlanta, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Plastic containers of Lactaid Whole Milk, Lactaid 2% Milk, Lactaid 1% Milk, Lactaid Nonfat Milk and Lactaid 2% Calcium-Fortified Milk with the expiration date “51-4109 P2” are the products subject to recall.

“This issue was discovered as a result of routine maintenance programs that revealed the potential for trace amounts of almonds to be present,” the company’s announcement reads.

HP Hood LLC encouraged consumers who had recalled products to return them to the retail establishment where they purchased them for a refund or exchange. Other customers can call the Hood Consumer Affairs Office during business hours Monday through Friday at 800-242-2423.

Lactaid milk is an alternative for those with lactose allergies or sensitivity. The company offers a variety of products, from cottage cheese to ice cream.

“LACTAID® “The milk uses a lactase enzyme to break down the lactose in farm-fresh milk into sugars that are easier to digest,” according to the company’s website.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with lactose intolerance have fewer lactase enzymes to break down lactose, the sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Lactose intolerance causes a reaction in the digestive system.

“It causes uncomfortable symptoms after consuming dairy products. Many people have difficulty digesting lactose, but not everyone experiences obvious symptoms. In this case, it is called lactose intolerance,” says the Cleveland Clinic.

According to the Mayo Clinic, anyone allergic to dairy products experiences an immune system reaction when they consume them. This can include rash, itching, wheezing, hives, swelling, vomiting and difficulty breathing.
