Kim Kardashian has sparked criticism for selling her “dirty” Birkin bag for nearly $70,000.
The 43-year-old reality star's bag recently went on sale on her family's retail site, Kardashian Kloset. According to her description on the website, the gray bag is a Birkin 30. The “rare” Hermès bag is from Kardashian’s “coveted collection” and comes with “gold hardware and double handles.” The crocodile leather Birkin bag also comes with a “turn-and-lock closure.”
The item description states that the bag is in “good condition,” but has “some discoloration on the handles and bottom bottom corners.” There are also some “small scratches” on the metal of the bag. At Kardashian Kloset, the Skims founder's bag is on sale for $69,995, plus a $14.95 domestic shipping fee.
The list was reposted on the popular Kardashian-themed Reddit page, “KUWTKsnark,” where fans expressed their confusion over the bag's appearance. Some criticized the high price of the bag, and many claimed that some parts of the bag do not look clean. They also questioned why the product was put on sale in the first place.
“It can be yours for only $70 thousand!” one wrote. “Seriously, how desperate are you for money? And why doesn't anyone find it strange that these 'billionaires' sell their second-hand clothes?
“That's so dirty,” said another, while a third wrote: “Wouldn't the kind of people who have $70,000 to spend on a handbag just buy a new one? If you have $70,000 to spend on a bag, why would you want second-hand Kardashian bags?
Other people focused on the marks on the bag and the discoloration on the handles, with many wondering if Kardashian had cleaned the bag before selling it.
“All hardware is worn and dull, edges are worn and slightly frayed, and discolored from makeup or suntan lotion. Just wow. “Anyone who buys this from them is an idiot, they don't even bother to restore it or store it properly,” one wrote.
“The nerve to list at that price with all the discoloration on the handles and wear on the bottom and bottom corners,” another added.
This is not the first Birkin bag that Kardashian has put up for sale. Earlier this month, she put her peacock blue Birkin 30 bag on Kardashian Kloset, for the price of $49,995. According to the item description, the bag was in “good condition” with “slight discoloration on the handles and wear on the bottom corners, small scratches on the metal, and small signs of wear on the interior.”
In January 2023, The Kardashians The star also made headlines for selling several of her personal Balenciaga items at reduced prices, after the brand was embroiled in controversy over two advertising campaigns featuring children. At that point, Kardashian had listed more than 30 Balenciaga items, both rare and new, with the tags still on. A pair of black Balenciaga sneakers were also marked down from $850 to $680.
Meanwhile, a mocha brown cropped tracksuit was selling for $1,515, after initially being listed for $1,895, and a “rare and new” Balenciaga denim jacket with tags had been reduced from $1,195 to $955.
In December 2022, Balenciaga was at the center of a major scandal after the luxury fashion brand published two photoshoots: one featuring children posing with teddy bears dressed in bondage clothing and another showing an image of a Supreme Court opinion on child pornography. The company issued an apology for the campaigns, in which they condemned child abuse, and Kardashian also spoke out, saying she was “reevaluating” her relationship with the brand.
However, in January 2024 she announced that she was the new Balenciaga brand ambassador and expressed that their “long-standing relationship is based on mutual trust and a commitment to doing the right thing.”
