Anti-monarchists criticize the cost of military assistants
Anti-monarchists have criticized the £500,000 spent on military aides to the royal family last year, revealed following a Freedom of Information (FoI) request.
Graham Smith, chief executive of Republic, described the aides, known as squires who come from the Armed Forces, as a “disgraceful use of highly trained military personnel”.
In its response to Republic's FoI request, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the “vast majority” of the costs would still have occurred wherever military men and women were stationed.
Mr Smith said: “This is a disgraceful use of highly trained military personnel as a front for the King. I call on the military and the Government to end this practice immediately.
“We often hear that the military is stretched thin and understaffed. With its additional commitments to Ukraine, how can the Government justify spending part of the country's defense budget on people to open doors for Charles, Camilla and William?
Squires are an integral part of the royal offices, and the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales and the Princess Royal have assistants who help organize their diaries and accompany them on official visits and Trips abroad.
Some of the attendees have risen to prominence after serving the royal family, with Lord Soames acting as Charles's equerry in the early 1970s and becoming a close friend of the King and serving as an MP for more than 30 years.
In its response to the FoI request, the MoD said it spent £506,681 on the mews in 2023.
He added: “…you may find it useful to note that the vast majority of costs come from fixed staff costs, which the MoD would still incur regardless of where these staff were employed.”
Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have been contacted for comment.
