On Thursday, July 4, the United States will honor Independence Day.
Each year on July 4, the United States celebrates independence from Great Britain in 1776. That year, on July 2, the Continental Congress passed Richard Henry Lee's independence resolution. Lee, a delegate from Virginia, introduced his proposal during the June 7 meeting of the Continental Congress in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in Philadelphia.
On July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson. Although the law recognizes specific federal holidays, this does not mean that people who work for private companies must have work off.
